Columbia, S.C.’s Best Black-Owned Restaurants for Plant-Based and Pescatarian Eats

One of our favorite things about our hometown is that it’s a bonafide foodie haven—if you stick to the chains around Columbia, you’re missing out in the worst way.

The Black-owned restaurant scene in Columbia, S.C. is particularly bustling and diverse. Picking our top 5 favorites was tough, but we promise you can’t go wrong with these local culinary gems.

A Peace of Soul Vegan Kitchen

2338 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201

This Black woman owned, Main Street legend is our go-to as soon as we hit the city! Offering 100% plant-based cuisine and vegan comfort food, A Peace of Soul is ranked in the top 10 vegan eats nationwide by Food Network. Try their crowd favorite Fried “Chicken” Sandwich, locally grown collards, fresh-pressed limeades, and literally anything else on the menu and thank us later. We’ve probably eaten here hundreds of times (maybe more!) and have yet to try a dish we don’t love!

Mimsy’s Restaurant

494-1 Town Center Pl, Columbia, SC 29229

West African food is some of our favorite food, and Mimsy’s modern take on Ghanaian cuisine hits on all cylinders. From the fufu, jollof rice, and egusi to the red snapper, spicy honey salmon, and a number of salads and vegan options, this cultural eatery takes spice and flavor to remarkable levels. A true must-try!

The Toasty Hot Spot

1305 Lady St, Columbia, SC 29201

Serving up made-to-order Southern-style breakfast and brunch, the city’s “Local Brunch Dealer” is definitely in it to win it. We look forward to returning again! For our first ever visit, Steve enjoyed the creole style Shrimp & Biscuits and grits, and Jess’s Spinach Mozzarella Bagel with Avocado smash was too delish to even make the pics.

Java Juice Cafe

504 Gervais St, Columbia, SC 29201

Beat the heat and feed your cells with fresh, cold-pressed fruit and veggie juices made to order in no time flat. Stay extra safe in these streets with immunity and other health shots, too!

Greedy Rascals (aka The Hotdog Bar)

651 St Andrews Rd, Columbia, SC 29210

We’d *just* missed the veggie dogs on the day we stopped by, but the seasoned veggie nachos and Salmon/seafood burger were finger licking options, too!

Give these Black-owned eats in Columbia a try, and let us know which ones are your favorite!
